So don’t think that your child is alone who is having a history of allergy. No parent wants their child to suffer from any disease condition. Yet some unfavorable condition arises which make your child susceptible to an allergic condition. This can be seen in any child but is more commonly seen in those children who have a family history of allergies.

For every parent, it is not possible to control the things which their child is exposed to or what their child eats. But they can focus on their children for their symptoms.

If detected early for childhood allergies, it can improve the quality of life as well as decrease the child missed school days, improves your child’s ability to sleep, play and other activities.

According to centers for disease control and prevention, the prevalence in American children has increased more for skin and food allergies. This increased prevalence varies in age. It was seen that the younger children are more susceptible to have skin allergies while in older children respiratory allergies are more seen.

Now a day’s respiratory allergies have become more common among the children which remain stable during their period of time. There are some common allergies found in American children who suffer from them.

Factors which are responsible for causing allergies in American children

  1. Common airborne allergens
  2. Common food allergens
  3. Other common allergens

Common airborne allergens:-

This is carried through the air. It includes:-

Dust mite:-

These are microscopic insects and are a main allergic component of the house dust. They are present year-round and are present in bedding, carpets, and upholstery.


They are major causes of allergies and allergies due to pollen is called hay fever or rose fever. Pollens are the tiny particles released in the air from trees, weeds, and grasses to fertilize other plants. Pollen allergies are seasonal and pollen counts are mostly high in the morning in warm, dry and breezy days while the count decreases when the weather gets chilly or wet.


They are fungi which grow both indoors and outdoors where they get favorable condition to grow. They are mostly seen in a warm and moist area. Molds are also seasonal but few molds grow year around especially indoors.

Pet allergies:-

This allergy is caused by the pet dander which are tiny flakes of shed skin and by animal saliva. When the pet licks themselves few drops of their saliva get on the fur which gets dried and the particles become airborne and get attached to the fabrics of the house. Some people also allergic to pet urine when the area is not cleaned properly.


In inner cities, they play a major role in household infection. People living in the building infested with cockroaches are more susceptible to asthma.

Common food allergens:-

There are about two million children in America are affected by allergens due to food. These food items are:-

  • Cow’s milk or cow’s milk protein
  • Eggs
  • Fish or shellfish
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, cashews)
  • Soy
  • Wheat

  • Medicines
  • Chemicals
  • Irritants (cigarette, perfumes, car exhaust)

Signs and symptoms of the allergies vary from person to person and allergies to allergies. Few people show exaggerated signs and symptoms for which they need emergency while few show symptoms that can be controlled by medicine. The common symptoms which are present in allergies are-

  • Itchy eyes
  • Stuffy nose
  • Sneezing
  • Throat tightness
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Vomiting
  • Fainting

For children who have severe allergies due to any of the trigger factor, they should be taken under emergency treatment as this condition can be life-threatening. So their parents are advised not to take any kind of risk with their condition. This acute condition is called anaphylaxis and this condition starts within a few seconds after exposure to the trigger factor of allergens.

Airborne allergen symptoms

Due to airborne allergen the condition develops is known as allergic rhinitis. The symptoms include:-

  • Running nose
  • Sneezing
  • Redness of the eyes
  • Watering of  the eyes
  • Itching in the nose
  • Sore throat
  • Cough

If redness and watering of eyes are present in the child then this condition is known as allergic conjunctivitis.

Symptoms of food, insect and medicine allergy:-

  • Itchy, watery and swollen eyes
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Swelling
  •  Drop-in blood pressure, causing light head or loss of consciousness
  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Coughing
  • Hoarseness in throat
  • Throat tightness
  • Pain in stomach
  • Vomiting and diarrhea

Symptoms vary with the person. Not all will show all the symptoms. Few will give only hives while others can give eye symptoms and throat symptoms. But remember if the child has a mild reaction in their past that does not mean in their next attack they will show a mild reaction, it can be a severe reaction.

Nasal congestion:-

Due to allergies, your child suffers from chronic nasal congestion as a stuffed nose. This produces the condition in which your child is not able to breathe through the nose and has to breathe through the open mouth especially in the night while sleeping.

Due to this condition, your child does not get proper sleep rather it becomes a restless night for him, which makes your child look tired and sleepy in the morning after waking up.

If this condition is not treated at that time or if it was left untreated, it affects the growth of teeth and bones of the face in the child. Proper treatment is needed for nasal congestion to prevent complications.

Ear infections:-

Due to the allergies, it produces the inflammation in the ear which leads to the accumulation of fluid inside the ear. This accumulation of fluid increases the chances of ear infection which as a result causes a decrease in hearing.

This condition produces the symptoms like itching in the ear, heaviness with the pulsating type of pain and fullness in the ear. If your child is having impaired hearing while learning to talk, contact your doctor for this and start the proper treatment.

How to diagnose allergies?

Symptoms of allergies can be easily identified but few allergic symptoms are difficult to diagnose as their symptoms correspond with other disease conditions.

If your child suffers from cold and symptoms of cold which lasts for more than two weeks and these conditions arise every year at the same time than don’t delay to consult your doctor. Your child may be diagnosed with an allergy. Consult your doctor for it and medicine should be prescribed according to the condition of the child.

For diagnosing and finding out the cause of the allergy, the skin test is advised by the doctor. This can be done in two ways:-

  • A drop of purified liquid which contains allergen is poured on the skin of the forearm and is scratched with the small pricking device.
  • A small amount of allergen is inserted into the skin superficially. This test can sting a little bit and will not produce any pain.

After the procedure wait for 15 minutes, if the reddish lump appears on the skin which looks like a mosquito bite, this will confirm test positive.

Still, the child should give the symptoms of the allergy if the test comes positive.

Treatment for allergies

For allergy, there is no permanent cure but you can manage the symptoms of your child. The best way of treatment is conservative treatment which includes the management.

  • The first step is to avoid exposure to the trigger factor which causes allergy.
  • Educate your child about the allergy and the allergic reactions if they come into contact with the allergens.
  • If your child is going to play school or under caretaker, then tell them that your child has allergic reactions to the following things so that they keep that away from your child.
  • It is quite not possible to avoid the environmental allergens so parents and caretakers are advised to keep the medicines, antihistamines and nasal spray with them which are prescribed by the doctors.
  • For airborne allergy, your doctor can give you allergy shots (immunotherapy). But this therapy is not for food allergens.
